I did a special M. Nicholson Hip Hop Fitness class for a group of youth recently. After doing two 30 minute sessions. We all gathered in another room where the kids sat on the floor and they proceeded to ask questions. The questions ranged from health and fitness to entrepreneurial activities. One of the questions that the young folk asked was. What do I tell someone who doesn’t know how to dance? I explained that there is no such thing as a person that cannot dance. Everyone can dance.

The thing that I have come to understand as it pertains to rhythm and movement overall is that no one person is the same. You remember the theme song from “Different Stroke”? It started out by telling you that the world does not move to the beat of just one drum! What might be right for may not be right for some. There you have it. It’s not the issue that people cannot dance. It’s that they are moving to their own unique rhythm.

The other obstacle that gives people the illusion that they cannot dance is being too analytical. Folks tend to overthink when they began to dance. They are concerned about the environment and who’s around and what they might be thinking. They start to think wether they are doing it right or not. This interferes with the bodies natural instinct on how it should move. Thus causing folks to pull out the Eileen from Seinfield move out.
One of the things that we encourage people in our M. Nicholson Hip Hop Fitness classes is to just move. Once you start moving. Everything begins to fall in place. You will start to catch the routines once your body locks into the rhythm.
